Moulin Rouge! is a unique and visually stunning 'Spectacular Spectacular' musical, spoken and sung featuring many lyrics from popular music.
In 1899 in Paris, an English poet, Christian (Ewan McGregor) is in search of 'Bohemia', and falls in love with the star of the Moulin Rouge, cabaret actress and courtesan Satine (Nicole Kidman). Harold Zidler (Jim Broadbent), the proprietor of the Moulin Rouge, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec and a troupe of performers provide the backdrop.
Released in 2001, the movie is directed, produced and co-written by Baz Luhrmann. It was praised for Luhrmann's direction, the performances of the cast, its soundtrack, costume design and production values. At the 74th Academy Awards, the film received eight nominations, including "Best Picture", and won two: "Best Production Design" and "Best Costume Design".
