He used military force to acquire and retain political power during the English Civil Wars, and played a key role in the execution of Charles I which led to the Commonwealth of England, ruled by Cromwell as Lord Protector from 1653 until his death. Perhaps his strict Puritan Protestant beliefs led to the brutality of his 1649 conquest of Ireland, for which he is still remembered with much bitterness.
