Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid is not only a "Classic", but also the cult "Western" of all time. It tells the story of Wild West outlaws Robert LeRoy Parker, known as Butch Cassidy (Paul Newman),and his partner Harry Longabaugh, the "Sundance Kid" (Robert Redford), who are on the run from a crack US posse after a string of train robberies. The pair and Sundance's lover, Etta Place (Katharine Ross), flee to Bolivia to escape the posse.
The film launched Robert Redford's career in the stratosphere and he was forever afterwards called "Sundance". Not fond of the Hollywood crowd, he lived on a ranch in Utah, where he founded the Sundance Film Festival in 1978, now the largest independent film festival in USA.
Burt Bacharach and Hal David wrote the song "Raindrops Keep Fallin' on My Head" for the film, which was an enormous "hit" around the world.
Released in 1969, it was the top-grossing film of the year. It was nominated for 7 Academy Awards, winning four: Best Story & Screenplay; Best Cinematography; Best Original Score; Best Song. It also won 9 BAFTAs, including Best Film, Best Direction, Best Leading Actor (Robert Redford), Best Leading Actress.
There is a small fee of £2 per person for the hall hire, tea/coffee and towards equipment - there is no charge for the film. Tea/coffee and biscuits will be available afterwards, but PLEASE bring your own mug.
